Helping a Scottish animal charity could help University of Dundee students become top dogs when applying for future work.
The Scottish SPCA will be one of dozens of charities and community organisations visiting campus on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 February as the University hosts its annual Volunteering Fair.
In the dog-eat-dog employment market, employers are increasingly looking for candidates with a breadth of experience. Volunteering is an established way for students to bolster their CV, giving them a crucial advantage when applying for work and preventing them from missing out by a whisker for their dream role.
Lesley Toles, the Scottish SPCA’s Volunteering Programme Manager, said, “Volunteering with the Scottish SPCA is designed to be very flexible for students so that they can fit in supporting us around their busy lives and studies.
“We are already lucky enough to have several Dundee students who volunteer their time to support our work, and the difference they make is valued greatly.
“We simply ask our student volunteers to take five minutes once a month to share information about our work, services and events, while others have also chosen to get involved in fundraising events, digital events and collections.
“By offering us just a little bit of time every month, students can make a big difference to our work, while we can provide new opportunities to develop skills that can benefit them in their future careers.”
This year’s Volunteering Fair will see more than 30 groups gather at the University’s Dalhousie Building, with stallholders offering volunteer positions throughout Dundee and the wider region.
Mark McCabe, from the University’s Careers Service, said, “Charities like the Scottish SPCA are fantastic for our students to get involved with, offering a range of flexible opportunities that allow individuals to develop practical skills and their confidence.
“Not only does this allow students to build their CV, but their support also plays a crucial role in assisting charities and organisations that are part of the fabric of our community.”
The University of Dundee Volunteering Fair takes place in the Dalhousie Building on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 February, from 10:30 – 13:30 each day. Registration in advance is required and can be completed online.
